The spiny cheek crayfish (Faxonius limosus) is an invasive freshwater crayfish species in the UK, originally introduced to Europe from North America for aquaculture. Recognized by the spiny ridges along the sides of its carapace, this species is highly adaptable and poses a significant threat to native ecosystems. It outcompetes the native white clawed crayfish (Austropotamobius pallipes), disrupts habitats through burrowing, and acts as a vector for crayfish plague (Aphanomyces astaci), which is deadly to native crayfish.
