Species identification

£120.00 excl. VAT

Our species identification test provides species-level identification of specimens from a range of sample types including fur, tissue, blood, droppings, scats, plants, and microorganisms. We can accept almost any type of sample, and the test is lifestage-independent, so it can identify juvenile specimens where morphological identification would require culturing.

We recommend the use of our specimen sampling kit for this analysis but we understand that sometimes you need to submit a sample without the hassle of ordering a sampling kit first.

The sample types we are able to accept for this test are:

  • Fur and feathers (ideally freshly collected, plucked is the ideal)
  • Blood and tissue, even trace smears on a cotton bud
  • Droppings / Scats
  • Plant material, fungal samples
  • Invertebrates (this test is lifestage independent, feel free to send anything from an egg or a leg, to the whole specimen!)

Please make sure to secure your sample in:

  • Sterile containers, for example, 30mL universal or 100mL sampling pot
  • Eppendorf tubes

Please add IPA or Ethanol to your sample if you have any, as this will help to preserve your sample during transit.

If you are unsure if we can accept the sample type you want to test, please contact us and we will advise.

Our species identification test can be ordered online and once your order is received we email you a sample submission form and instructions for how to send your sample.

This test is carried out via DNA metabarcoding, so that any contaminating sequences (e.g. human) can be eliminated from the analysis to improve the final identification.

The results for this test are uploaded to your account. You can create your account when you order. You’ll be notified by email as soon as your sample is received by us, and again as soon as the results are ready to retrieve from the portal.

The results for the bat identification test come in the form of a laboratory test certificate showing the species identified.

If you do not have a business account with us then all testing must be prepaid via a credit or debit card. No credit terms will be available to customers without a business account.
