The smooth newt (Lissotriton vulgaris) is one of the most common amphibians in the UK, found in a variety of habitats, including ponds, gardens, and grasslands. Recognizable by its smooth skin and males’ crest during the breeding season, the species is an important part of the ecosystem as both predator and prey. Smooth newts are widespread and adaptable but can be impacted by habitat loss and pollution.

The testing for detection of this species is carried out via real-time PCR (qPCR), which has the greatest sensitivity and specificity of all eDNA detection methods.
