The rudd (Scardinius erythrophthalmus) is a native freshwater fish species in the UK, commonly found in lakes, ponds, and slow-moving rivers. Known for its bright golden scales and reddish fins, the rudd is a popular species among anglers and plays an important role in freshwater ecosystems as both prey and predator of smaller organisms. It thrives in vegetated waters, where it feeds on plants, insects, and small invertebrates.

The testing for detection of this species is carried out via real-time PCR (qPCR), which has the greatest sensitivity and specificity of all eDNA detection methods.
