Plaice (Pleuronectes platessa) is a commercially and ecologically important flatfish species found in costal and offshore waters around the UK. Recognisable by its distinctive orange spots on a brown, flattened body, plaice inhabit sandy or muddy sea beds, where they feed on invertebrates such as worms and crustaceans. It is a key species for fisheries and plays an integral role in marine ecosystems.

The testing for detection of this species is carried out via real-time PCR (qPCR), which has the greatest sensitivity and specificity of all eDNA detection methods.
