The brown trout (Salmo trutta) is a widespread and ecologically important freshwater fish species in the UK, inhabiting rivers, streams, and lakes across the country. Known for its adaptability, the species exhibits diverse life histories, with some populations remaining in freshwater while others migrate to the sea as sea trout. Brown trout are highly valued in recreational fishing and are considered an indicator of healthy aquatic ecosystems. however, they face threats from habitat degradation, pollution, and competition with invasive species.

The testing for detection of this species is carried out via real-time PCR (qPCR), which has the greatest sensitivity and specificity of all eDNA detection methods.
