Salmo salar

The Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) is an iconic and ecologically significant species found in UK rivers and coastal waters. Known for their remarkable life cycle, these anadromous fish migrate from freshwater rivers to the ocean, returning to their natal streams to spawn. Atlantic salmon populations in the UK are concentrated in Scotland, Wales, and parts of England, where they are vital for biodiversity and recreational fisheries. However, they face significant threats from habitat degradation, overfishing, and climate change, leading to declines in their populations.
